Mediterranean Study Abroad INFO SESSION
Adriana Elser and Kristin Barry will be leading the CAP: Mediterranean study abroad in Summer 2026. Attend this information session to learn more about the program.
Step into the world of ancient gods, heroes, oracles, and rituals in this immersive study abroad course exploring Myth and Magic in the Ancient World. Centered in Greece—the cradle of Western mythology and religion—this course combines academic inquiry with experiential learning at some of the most evocative
archaeological sites of the ancient Mediterranean.
Through visits to sites such as Delphi, where the oracle of Apollo once spoke; Epidauros, home of Asclepius and ancient healing practice; and Delos, the mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, students will examine how myth shaped ritual and identity. At Knossos on Crete, we will explore Minoan myths such as the Minotaur and labyrinth, and consider the archaeological evidence behind them. The course will also include explorations of Athens, where civic life, myth, and ritual intersected at the Acropolis; Mycenae, legendary city of Agamemnon; and Olympia, the origin of
the Olympic Games.
Students will engage with primary sources, material culture, and current scholarship to investigate how myth and magic functioned in ancient societies—shaping mortal identity and architectural form. The course includes lectures, readings, guided site visits, and on-site reflections, offering a rare opportunity to experience the ancient world where myth was lived as much as it was told. No prior knowledge of classical mythology or Greek history is required—only a sense of wonder and a readiness to walk in the footsteps of gods and mortals.
